What Tools are needed?
Here's what I use!
Sculpting Tool Set: These are my favorite! I use them in almost every video. They are a good weight, strong, good quality, and smooth seamless edges.
Round Metal Circle Cutters: Give a sharp cutting edge. Love them.
Lollipop Sticks: Nobody wants to bite into a hidden toothpick inside a cake decoration! Ouch! Keep your cake decorations safe for everyone.
Fondant or Gum Paste?
What's the Difference?
I actually use BOTH for very different reasons.
Gum Paste: Is used to create cake toppers and cake decorations. It's very similar to fondant, but it will dry and harden quickly, therefore it's great for making thin decorations like flowers. In addition, gum paste allows you to make 3D cake decorations that will hold their shape more precisely.
Fondant: Is used to cover a cake. It's stays soft and never really dries, therefore it remains chewy and you can bite through it without any problem. It works great for non-weight bearing decorations.
Tylose Powder: Makes your Fondant moldable like Gum Paste. Used to create cake decorations that makes a stiffer material that could support it's own weight.
Adding Color
Gel Food Coloring: Used to color both Fondant and Gum Paste
Food Coloring Markers: Used to draw or write on cake decoration
Crisco: Non-stick surface without dulling colors like powered sugar or corn starch.
Shaping Tools
Rolling Pin: Smooth rolling surface that won't leave a seam mark like the cheap ones.
Square Cutter: Gives sharp corners and straight sides. Love them!
Fondant Smoother: Gives good flat surface, unlike the cheap ones no name ones.
Cake Stacking and Boxing
Stacking Pillars: Used for a multiple layer cake
Stacking Plate: Interlocking with Pillars giving structural support and stability.
Cake Boxes: Two piece boxes allow tall cakes to fit with a piece of tape holding lid.
Cake Dummy: When you only need small cake, but want a multi tier look
Buy the 5lb Bulk Size
Bigger Sizes and Colors
5 lb Size: If you are making larger cakes or several cakes you may want to get the larger size of either Fondant or Gum Paste. It will last a while, but it will dry out if you don't use it often enough.
Colored Fondant & Gum Paste: You can buy colored Fondant or Gum Paste in many different colors. I prefer to use food coloring to make the exact color I want, but sometimes I'll treat myself to some premixed colors. For example, to get a deep. dark black it's a lot easier to get the premixed stuff instead of making it yourself. Plus, it prevents my hands from getting so stained with the food coloring.
